Porsche for the discerning Gentlemen About this model : In 1978 Porsche Design collaborated with IWC to create a unique watch design with a compass and an emergency beacon mirror fitted inside the case. The case and the bracelet were made from a special hardened aluminum alloy with a PVD coating added on top. This model was designed with a hinged case that allows the top portion to flip open by pressing the buttons on the side of the lugs. Inside, it reveals a compass and an emergency beacon mirror. In addition, all magnetic components were replaced with non-magnetic components to prevent any interference with the accuracy of the compass. IWC Schaffhausen International Watch Co. AG Founded in 1868 for the discerning Gentlemen In 1868, American engineer and watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones (1841–1916), who had been a director of E. Howard & Co., in Boston, then America's leading watchmaking company, founded the International Watch Company with the intention of combining Swiss craftsmanship with the modern engineering technology from the U.S. to manufacture watch movements and other watch parts for the American market. In the mid-1970s IWC decided to redesign the Ingenieur to give it a more "fashion forward" look. With the new model, IWC tried to emulate the concept of one of its rivals.
